How Often Should You Update Your Headshot? A Simple Rule for NW Ohio Professionals

By Brian Bushong Photography — Guided, Confident, Professional Headshots in Northwest Ohio

I’ve worked with plenty of professionals who didn’t think their headshot was outdated, until they saw a new one.

Most people keep the same headshot far longer than they should. If you’re like many professionals in Toledo, Perrysburg, Bowling Green, or Sylvania, your photo may be outdated, overly formal, or no longer representative of who you are today.

Your headshot is often the first impression people have of you. It shows up everywhere—LinkedIn, email signatures, company websites, conference materials, community organizations, and social platforms.  So, how do you know when it’s time to update yours?

Here’s a simple, stress-free rule to follow.

The 18-24 Month Rule

That's Me - Brian

For most professionals, updating your headshot every 18–24 months is a good rule of thumb. It’s often just enough time for look, confidence, or role to shift without you even realizing it.

This keeps your image modern, accurate, and aligned with your current role and presence. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s relevance.

Update Sooner If Any of These Apply

1. You’ve changed your appearance noticeably
New haircut, glasses, weight change, facial hair, or overall style.  If someone wouldn’t immediately recognize you in person—update your photo.

2. You're taking on a new role
New job, promotion, leadership role, running for a community position, starting a business—your headshot should match the direction you’re heading.

3. Your current photo feels awkward, stiff, or outdated
If you don’t love your headshot, you won’t use it.
If you avoid posting it because it doesn’t feel like “you,” it’s time for a refresh.

4. You're pivoting you personal or professional brand
Real estate agents, consultants, educators, healthcare professionals, and small-business owners often need updated images as they expand their influence or visibility.

Why You Will Benefit From Updated Photos

In this region, personal connection matters. People want to work with someone who feels:
  • Approachable
  • Confident
  • Genuine
  • Professional
A modern headshot helps communicate exactly that before the first conversation ever happens.

A Simple Approach That Removes the Stress

You don’t need a complicated plan. Here’s what I recommend:

  • Update your headshot every 18–24 months
  • Refresh sooner if your appearance or role has changed
  • Choose a photographer who guides you through expression and posing so you feel confident (that’s my specialty)

Your image should reflect the person you are today—not the person you were five years ago.

When you're ready for your first headshot or an undated one, you will benefit from one that looks polished and natural. I’ll walk you through every step.
